514: Grace Lewis is building a cool career

I’ve been enjoying watching the career of double bassist Grace Lewis unfold.  A former student of John Schimek’s at Oklahoma City University, Grace is currently completing her graduate studies with Dennis Whittaker at the University of Houston.

We dig into Grace’s path through the music world, what she finds gratifying about bass events like the KC Bass Workshop, how to develop a bass studio from scratch, teaching materials Grace is digging, and much more.  Be sure to follow along with Grace’s adventures on Instagram, and enjoy this fun conversation with one of the bass world’s young stars!

488: Matthew Golombisky on starting a record label

Like so many great artists, it’s hard to pin down the artistry of Matthew Golombisky.  His website states “Bassist, Composer, Educator, Ideator.”  That’s an intriguing tagline for a fascinating and multidimensional artist.

Matthew runs ears&eyes Records and is the founder and conductor of the Tomorrow Music Orchestra.   AllAboutJazz writer Jakob Baekgaard called Matthew a modern “renaissance man” in this fascinating deep-dive into his career.

Matthew has been active as an artist in New Orleans, Chicago (where he played in the Gunelpumpers with my former teacher Michael Hovnanian), Oakland, and Buenos Aires.  We covered a lot of ground in this interview—enjoy!
