643: Pawel Knapik on Polish bass music

Pawel Knapik is a bassist and composer originally from Poland and currently living and working in New York City.  He has been a longtime champion of Polish composers, and he recently performed the American premiere of Tadeusz Kassern’s Double Bass Concerto.

Pawel is also an accomplished composer, and how he has written many pieces for the double bass, including his Westbeth Capriccio.  He has also put together a documentary about the life of Tadeusz Kassern and his time in the United States.

We talk about Tadeusz’ life as a diplomat, how he found himself in the United States, his unique compositional voice, and the CGDA tuning in which his concerto is written.  We also talk about Pawel’s backstory, his multiple entrepreneurial projects, and more.  Enjoy!

Valentina Ciardelli is one of my favorite young bass artists, and she and I share a passion for the music of Frank Zappa.  Valentina is launching her first CD, titled Zappa, Puccini, Tabakov, Ciardelli: Music from the Sphinx, on September 20th, 2019.

We talk about a wide array of topics, ranging from her recent arrangements and recording of Cletus Awreetus Awrightus and many other works to how she got permission from the Zappa estate to record Frank Zappa’s music.

621: Erica Bramham on her double bass journey

  Erica Bramham is a critically acclaimed vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer from Melbourne, Australia.  She has recently taken up the bass and has been studying with Anita Hustas.  For her, playing the bass has been a uniquely challenging experience, and one that she has become deeply passionate about.

Erica has developed several interesting projects in recent years, including:

  • The Song Chain Project – writing a song a day for 203 straight days
  • The Dryad Project – bringing creativity and improvisation into her practice routine and letting the instrument direct her creative process, all while using composition to help solve technical challenges

We talk about these projects, the value of routines, reflections on her first year of playing double bass, and more, and we also feature excerpts from her singing and her partner Adam Speigl playing bass on A Low Heavy Sun.
